SNL sees Andy Samberg Parodying Gotye

Spinner Canada has a great article and accompanying videos for what happened last night on Saturday Night Live with musical guest Gotye. Gotye’s painted-self in the video “Somebody That I Used to Know” became fodder for comedy last night as Andy Samberg ripped off all of his clothes and painted himself up in the same artwork featured in the video. See Spinner Canada’s article below for all of the details.

Here is the articlehttp://www.spinner.ca/2012/04/15/gotye-snl-saturday-night-live/

Review from MRU’s Reflector: John K. Samson’s Provincial

John K. Samson

Provincial
Epitaph

Frontman John K. Samson breaks from the folds of his Winnipeg folk-rock band The Weakerthans to produce this nostalgic and intimate look at growing up and surviving in Canada with his new album. Provincial is mostly filled with the same upbeat and twangy guitar sound that The Weakerthans are known for in the recollections of their Winnipeg roots, but Samson paints a picture for his listeners that is much more intimate and mellowed out. The sounds Samson creates in his rather sombre tune “Grace General” are born out of a slow-string quartet framed with the heart of a whining brass section. Samson’s album combines cooler and more frigid imagery of the Canadian winter with strong drum accords and guitar licks. These give the album an interesting blend of strength and vulnerability. At times the album recollects the same-old Canadian stories that are brought forth from The Rural Alberta Advantage’s Departed.

Stream New Wild Everywhere by The Great Lake Swimmers

Yes, we are aware that the new album by The Great Lake Swimmers called New Wild Everywhere was released on April 3rd. However, there are probably those of you out there who are strapped for cash or maybe aren’t ready to purchase the album. Aren’t they generous! If you love the melodic folksy sounds of this Toronto-based indie band then you really should not miss this album. This album is again lovely, banjoic, pleasant and nature inspired. What the Swimmers had begun in their past four albums has begun to blossom completely with this, their fifth album release.

Upcoming Shows YYC: Said The Whale and Chains of Love

Get your tickets soon for Thursday April 26th! Vancouver Indie-Pop band Said The Whale will be returning to Calgary to play the MacEwen Ballroom at University of Calgary with guests Chains of Love. You can get tickets via the link below from Prime Box Office here in YYC. Said the Whale has not hesitated to add Calgary to its touring list over the past 5 or 6 years and with the release of their new album Little Mountain their return will bring new songs soaked with plenty of catchy new riffs, soft tinkling xylophone melodies and surely a fierce blend of vocals via Jacelyn (keyboardist) and Tyler Bancroft (lead vocals).

Although often placed in the folk category, in their previous albums: vis-a-vis Howe Sounds, their (Said the Whale’s) music is undoubtedly rather more upbeat but sweet pop blending with innocent and honest Vancouver memories. This band is all about nostalgia, sleepy rhythms and ironically strong guitar riffs transposed with the sounds of triangles and other quirky addictive sounds.

Pick up your tickets soon, their live shows are not to be missed.

And yet another strange album cover, only this time by artist Stephin Meritt. The album is entitled Obscurities. We are getting quite good at discovering some interesting album art. Our latest was Four Tet’s most recent album. Seems as though independent artists are taking to aquatic themed or octopi themed album covers.

So apparently, Battles just released a new track with Gary Numan called “My Machines”. What do we learn from this video? Do not let this happen to you on an escalator and if it does, Gary Numan will not save you (Thanks Will). If you do plan on losing one of your bags on an escalator, make sure you have some back up, and of course that you aren’t filming a music video unwillingly. This new song comes from Battles’ new LP Gloss Drop coming soon.

New and Old Pearl Jam

So I just heard this track played on my local radio station: early Pearl Jam covering Mother Love Bone’s “Crown of Thorns”. This version is not the same live version that they played over the air, this one though is similar and was found courtesy of Grooveshark. The reason I am so psyched about this track is that it will be part of the new soundtrack for the upcoming Pearl Jam documentary that comes out this fall. Stay tuned for that, but in the meantime have a listen to Pearl Jam’s cover of the song (one that they’ve played for a few of their live shows already). I cannot say anything about this track other than it is really good old fashioned Eddie Vedder at his best.

Muppets: The Green Album. NPR Provides a first listen.

Are you as anxious as we are about the new Muppet movie gracing the theaters this fall? Yeah, we thought so. The new Muppets movie featuring the acting talents of Jason Segal (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, How I Met Your Mother) and Amy Adams (The Fighter) comes to theaters November 23rd, just in time for Christmas. As a special treat, NPR has provided a playlist of the whole Green With Envy Soundtrack on their First Listen page. The soundtrack is much anticipated as it features the sounds/covers by Ok Go, Weezer, Andrew Bird and more. You can access the playlist here:
